"I HATE THIS HATRED"
To Mason, 'WRATH' isn't a song - it's a diary entry. Following a series of real-life attacks against him, this single served as an opening to vent Mason's deep-seated anger, frustrations and, at the end, message of hope and transformation.
The whole song is one continuous build-up, opening softly and setting the tone before quickly escalating into full-blown fury. At its peak Mason is drenched, chained from the neck to a post and screaming into an empty void of fog.
"I won't let you release, I won't let you remain. When I stop you from breathing I'll preach and I'll pray. When you're gone and deceased I can finally shake it, I struggle with demons - I try to constrain it."
These are the words spoken before Mason elevates the song, turning the tables to reflect on himself instead of solely blaming others.
"I'm lost lord, give me my peace. Give me my rest. Lord let me breathe, I know I'm blessed. I'm just in grief, I'm just a mess. Talk to me Jesus, please intercept."
His closing remarks turn to God - not in anger, but in repentance. How are we any better than our enemies if we repeat the violent cycle that was inflicted upon us? This degree of introspection changes the whole outlook on the song. He could've easily opted to lean into his rage throughout the entirety of the song but chose to reach deeper. Deeper within himself.
Mason's recent appearance on the Donkeyman Show provides us with further context. He stated his readiness to continue frequently releasing music, though it may not be what listeners are expecting.
'WRATH' may serve as a new beginning for Mason's musical journey without being the template his future songs stem from. This opens the proverbial door for Mason to experiment with different genres, tempos, styles and sound selections.
